2026 RIP Samsung Messages: End-of-Life Date Officially Announced | The Last Text: Samsung Officially Pulls the Plug on Its Messages App, Hands the Reins to Google
Dateline: July 2026 ?
It is official: the blue bubble versus green bubble war just lost a major player. Samsung has confirmed the end-of-life date for its long-standing Samsung Messages app, marking a quiet but significant shift in the Android ecosystem.
Why Samsung Is Shutting It Down
Samsung’s decision is part of a broader strategy to streamline its software experience and align more closely with industry standards. Instead of maintaining its own messaging platform, Samsung will now fully transition users to Google Messages, which was developed by Google. This move reflects the growing importance of Rich Communication Services (RCS), the modern replacement for SMS, which offers features such as:
Read receipts
- Typing indicators
- High-quality media sharing
- Enhanced group chats

According to an official announcement, Samsung will discontinue its Messages app starting July 2026, fully replacing it with Google Messages on all future Galaxy devices (and via mandatory updates for recent models).
What This Means for Users
If you are currently using Samsung Messages, here is what to expect:
- App Discontinuation: Support ends in July
- Automatic Transition: Many devices will prompt users to switch to Google Messages
- Chat Migration: Conversations transfer, but users should back up important messages
- Pre-installed App: New Samsung devices will come with Google Messages as default
If you have a new Galaxy phone (July 2026 onward), Samsung Messages will not be pre-installed. Google Messages will be the sole default.
If you have an existing Galaxy phone (S21, S22, S23, S24, S25, Z Fold/Flip series): An automatic software update starting in August 2026 will replace Samsung Messages with Google Messages. Your chat history will be automatically migrated to Google’s cloud backup.
If you prefer Samsung Messages, you will no longer receive security updates or RCS support after September 2026. The app will still open but is considered to be deprecated.
